About this project:
IODP planners are tasked with developing a budget and schedule for hundreds of possible voyages every year, then fully detailing approved voyages and managing the schedule while at sea. Completed budgets may sit unused for years, then be re-examined when an expedition is approved. Previous planning tools were slow to use, relied on best guess estimates, offered no scheduling support while at sea, and required much effort to update.
CAPSHER deciphered the planning process and created a tool that allows planners to generate accurate budgets and schedules, then to make live updates to estimates and track changes during voyages. It includes a centralized price tracking database that can automatically update an old file with current estimates. Planners are now able to produce more accurate estimates in less time and can better manage time during scientific expeditions.
IODP is an international scientific organization that conducts research into the evolution of Earth's crust, oceans, climate, and deep biosphere. Texas A&M University operates the scientific drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution for the National Science Foundation and its partners.
